Nutritional Eye Disease

Simon recently attended a lecture at the QLD Eye Hospital and was astounded by a case report on a 10 year old Brisbane boy who has lost a significant amount of vision as a result of poor nutrition.

“Nutritional Optic Neuropathy” is the condition and is caused by a lack of nutrients in the diet.  In this case the boy ate vegemite sandwiches for breakfast and dinner, with hot chips for lunch – and this was literally his entire diet.  This condition is irreversible.

One of the more staggering examples of this condition is known as the “Optic Neuropathy Epidemic of Cuba”.  During the 1991-1993 US Embargo on Cuba, whereby there was unprecedented economic downturn, Cuban’s diets were changed dramatically.  Up to 50,000 people have been since identified with Nutritional Optic Neuropathy as a result of this embargo.
